What does a true follower of Jesus look like? When it comes to how we as believers should live our lives, Jesus breaks down His commands throughout the bible which teaches us all of the intricacies of what we should strive towards throughout our walk. Everything from how to treat others, what to avoid, how to love, and more. Despite popular belief, Jesus’ commands are spread out in various chapters as opposed to just the handful of commands that are always mentioned. This post mentions just a bit of it—however, as we commit to reading the Word daily, we can begin to uncover every thing He has commanded.
The Commands of Jesus [Found within Matthew]:
Amend your lives: For the kingdom of Heaven is at nigh.
Follow me.
When revile + persecute you, and say all manners of evil, rejoice + be glad; for great is your reward in heaven.
Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works + glorify your Father in heaven.
If you are offering your gift at the altar + your brother have a problem with you, reconcile with them first; then offer your gift.
If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.
If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off + cast it away from you.
Do not swear + oath at all: neither by heaven or earth; let your yes be yes and your no, no!
Do not resist an evil person; if anyone slap you on the cheek, turn to the other cheek also; if anyone wants to sue you + take your shirt, hand over your coat also.
If anyone forces you to go one mile, go two miles.
Give to the one who asks you + don’t turn away the one who wants to borrow from you.
Love your enemies: bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, pray for them which hurt you + persecute you.
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others, to be seen by them.
When you give to the needy, do not blow trumpets; let your giving be in secret.
When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, to be seen by others.
When you pray, use no vain repetition like the heathens, for your Father knows your needs before you have them.
When you fast, do not be like the hypocrites with a sad face to appear to men that you’re fasting.
Do not store up your yourselves treasures on earth, where thieves break in + steal.
Do not worry about your life: what you will eat, drink, or wear.
Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness + all these things shall be added unto you.
Beware of false prophets, who come as wolves in sheep clothing; for you will know them by their fruit.
Follow me and let the dead bury the dead.
Be of good cheer, your sins are forgiven you.
Go and learn what this means: “I desire mercy and not sacrifice; for I didn’t come to call the righteous, but for the sinners to repent.”
Be of good cheer, your faith has made you well.
According to your faith, let it be onto you.
As you go, preach saying “the kingdom of heaven as at hand”.
If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town; shake the dust off your feet.
Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to counsels + scourge you in their synagogues.
Do not worry what you should speak, for it will be given to you in that hour what to speak by your Father’s spirit.
When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another.
Do not fear them, for there is nothing covered that won’t be revealed; nothing hidden that can’t be seen.
Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in your ear, preach on the rooftops.
Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; but rather, fear Him who is able to kill both body + soul in hell.
He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
Come to me all you who labor + are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle + lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your soul.
Either make the tree good + it’s fruit good or make the tree bad + it’s fruit bad; it is known by it’s fruit.
Listen + understand. What goes into their mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of your mouth defiles you.
Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees + the Sadducees.
If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross + follow me.
Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones; for in heaven their angels always see the face of the Father, who is in heaven.
If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his faults between you two alone; If he hears you then you have gained your brother; if not, take one or two more as witness. If not, tell it to the church; if he still doesn’t receive it, let him be to you like a heathen + tax collector.
Let the little children come to me, and do not forbid them; for as such is the kingdom of heaven.
If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions + give to the poor, and you’ll have treasure in heaven.
Give, therefore, the things which are Caesar’s unto Caesar; and the things which are God’s unto God.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all of your soul and with all your mind; this is the first + greatest command.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
The teachers of the law + the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you; but don’t do what they do; For they do not practice what they preach!
But you, do not be called “Rabbi”, for Christ alone is your teacher, and you’re all breathren.
Do not call anyone on earth “Father” for you have one Father + He is in heaven.
And do not be called teachers, for one is a teacher—-Christ.
Watch out that no one deceives you, for many will come in my name, claiming “I am the Messiah”; for many will be deceived.
You will hear of wars + rumors of wars; see that you are not troubled. For all these things must come to past.
When you see standing in the Holy Place the abomination of desolation—-those in Judea should flea to the mountain.
If anyone says to you, “look here is the Christ”, do not believe it.
Keep watch, for you do not know the day your Lord will come.
Take; eat. This is my body.
Watch + pray so that you will not fall into temptation.
Put your sword in it’s place, for those who live by the sword, die by it.
Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father + of the Son. Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent + believe the Gospel.
1 Corinthians 13:1 says, “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal”.
